Tamalanrea-Makassar. The Faculty of Forestry of Hasanuddin University (Unhas) received a visit from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, America, in the context of implementing a field school activity aimed at verbally documenting the community related to forest landscapes, environmental changes and conservation practices. This visit was officially received by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Unhas, Prof. Dr. Ir. A. Mujetahid M., S.Hut., M.P., IPU., took place in the Senate Room of the Faculty of Forestry, Unhas Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, Friday (4/7/2025).
Also present were the Chief of Forest and Society Research Group (FSRG) of the Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, Prof. Dr. Forest. Muhammad Alif KS., S.Hut., M.Sc., Micah Fisher (University of Hawai’i at Manoa) and students from the Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa who will participate in the field school activities.
On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Ir. A. Mujetahid M., S.Hut., M.P., IPU. conveyed his welcome to all delegates from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa who participated in the forest landscape field school in Hawai’i and Sulawesi. He conveyed the collaboration between the Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. He also emphasized the importance of building international collaboration as a form of adaptation in conducting more innovative research.
“We certainly hope that activities like this will bridge the gap between the Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. I hope this event runs smoothly and that the results will have a positive impact, both in expanding international networks and creating opportunities for mutually beneficial collaboration in the future,” explained Prof. A. Mujetahid.
Representing the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, Micah Fisher expressed his gratitude to the Faculty of Forestry at Hasanuddin University for facilitating this activity. He stated that this initiative was a long-planned goal and involved several individuals from various countries and universities, enabling a highly innovative research approach.
“Thank you for the blessing, assistance, and support from the Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, from the beginning of the preparation to the implementation of this activity. We are certainly very enthusiastic about presenting the results in the field, and the Chancellor of Hasanuddin University is interested in this activity,” explained Micah.
Micah Fisher further stated that this initial approach can continue and hopefully become more innovative in the future. We view forestry as a platform and a home, as it encompasses many people from diverse backgrounds—ecologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and social scientists—and that enriches everything we do, and hopefully, it can lead to multidisciplinary innovation.
The Forest and Society Research Group (FSRG), Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, and the College of Social Science, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, America collaborated to organize this activity.
This activity will be held in several villages within the Cenrana District, namely Rompegading Village, Limapoccoe Village, and Cenrana Baru Village, from July 7 to 15, 2025, involving students from Hasanuddin University and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. The Field School aims to document the community’s oral history related to the forest landscape, environmental change, and conservation practices.
