Faculty of Forestry Unhas and University of Hawaii at Manoa Joint Discussion Discusses the Potential of Candlenuts

Tamalanrea-Makassar. Deputy Dean for Partnership, Research, Innovation and Alumni, Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University (Unhas), Syahidah, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D. received a visit from a delegation from the University of Hawaii at Manoa to discuss the potential of candlenuts as sustainable aviation fuel. The activity took place starting at 13.00 WITA in the Senate Meeting Room, 2nd Floor, Faculty of Forestry, Unhas Tamalanrea Campus, Makassar, Thursday (17/4/2025).

Present at this activity, Deputy Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Syamsu Rijal, S.Hut., M.Sc., IPU., Delegation from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Prof. Scott Q Turn, Ph.D., Indonesian Researcher, Wendy Aritenang M.Sc., DIC., Ph.D., IPU. and several lecturers at the Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, namely, Prof. Makkarennu, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D., Prof. Dr. Syamsu Alam, M.S., Prof. Dr. Supratman, S.Hut., M.P., Emban Ibnu Rusyid Mas’ud, S.Hut., M.P., Sahriyanti Saad, S.Hut., M.Sc., Ph.D., Gusmiaty, S.P., M.P., Dian Ayu Lestari Hasanuddin, S.Hut., M.Si., Fatwa Faturachmat, S.Hut., M.Hut., Ahmad Rifqi Makassau, S. Hut., M. Hut. 

Syahidah, S.Hut., M.Sc., Ph.D. In his speech, he welcomed the University of Hawaii at Manoa delegation to Unhas Forestry. Syahidah presented a general overview of the Faculty of Forestry, Unhas, one of which is the journal managed from national to international scale which is indexed by Scopus Q1, namely Forest and Society and the journal Wallacea which is indexed by Scopus Q4. As well as the involvement of the Unhas Forestry Faculty in various research consortia, both national and international.

“The Unhas Faculty of Forestry really welcomes the collaboration on the potential of candlenuts. We hope that through this collaboration we can increase science and technology, as well as contribute to the development of sustainable renewable energy,” explained Syahidah.

Delegation from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Prof. Scott Q Turn, Ph.D. said that the aim and purpose of his visit to the Faculty of Forestry Unhas was to develop candlenuts as aviation fuel with a sustainable concept or Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

“Currently in Hawaii we have locally sustainable aviation fuel. Seeing the potential of candlenuts in Sulawesi, we are very interested in collaborating on further research regarding candlenuts as SAF raw materials,” explained Prof. Turn.

Indonesian researcher, Wendy Aritenang M.Sc., DIC., Ph.D., IPU.  Adding that candlenuts are a local commodity that has great potential. Plants with high economic value, environmentally friendly and can be planted on marginal land.

“The integration of the agricultural, forestry and renewable energy sectors is expected to have a direct positive impact on society, especially in increasing the economic value of local commodities,” said Wendy.

This activity was continued with a discussion discussing strategic steps, starting with the implementation of candlenut planting in the Unhas Educational Forest Area.
